Remote finance and accounting hiring has expanded sharply with the maturation of cloud accounting, close-automation, and FP&A tooling. The category covers everything from bookkeeping to head-of-finance roles, with very different licensure, salary, and seniority paths.
Finance is also a category where compliance constraints (residency, licensure, audit jurisdiction) restrict where you can be hired more than most other remote categories. The sections below cover what to look for.

Licensure and residency constraints
Controller, tax, and audit roles often require specific local credentials (CPA in the US, ACCA or ACA in the UK, CA in many Commonwealth countries) and almost always require residency in the jurisdiction being served.
FP&A and strategic finance are less constrained — many companies hire globally for these roles, especially at the senior+ levels where the work is heavily analytical rather than compliance-driven.
Bookkeeping work is the most globally hired but also the most price-competitive and most targeted by gig-economy platforms with thin margins.
Hiring process
Typical remote finance hiring runs: application + resume screen, recruiter call, hiring-manager interview, technical exercise (Excel/financial-modeling test, or case study), and a panel with cross-functional partners. Total time is 2-5 weeks.
For FP&A roles, expect to walk through a financial model under time pressure. For controller roles, expect technical-accounting scenarios. For senior leadership roles, expect references and deep prior-experience probing.
Pay ranges
Finance compensation is more compressed than engineering. Senior controllers and FP&A leaders at remote-first SaaS companies typically earn well, but the very top of finance compensation (CFO at scale) requires in-person elements at many companies.
Bookkeeping and entry-level accounting pay is competitive globally and has been under pressure from automation and gig-economy platforms.
Contractor vs full-time
Bookkeeping and fractional finance leadership (fractional CFO, fractional controller) are large contractor markets. Full-time embedded roles dominate at companies past Series B.
Scams and red flags
Finance roles are heavily targeted by scams because of the access to payments and banking. Common patterns: 'remote bookkeeper' roles that ask you to process checks or wire transfers through personal accounts; 'accounts payable' roles that turn out to be money-mule operations; 'CFO of a stealth startup' roles requesting personal SSN or banking details before a signed contract.
Legitimate employers never require you to process payments through your personal accounts and never request banking credentials before a signed offer letter.
AI and the finance role
AI has compressed routine accounting work (categorization, reconciliations, anomaly detection) and routine FP&A work (variance analysis, first-pass forecasts). Senior judgment, business-partnering ability, and the skill of communicating financial reality clearly to non-finance leaders have grown in value.
Every listing on RemoteWorkFinder is filtered through automated checks (domain age, apply-URL integrity, duplicate detection, scam-pattern matching) and periodic manual review. We never accept payment to feature a job, and we never charge employers for placement on category pages.
Never pay to apply. Legitimate employers never ask for application fees, training payments, or equipment deposits. If you see one, report it.
