The UK has the most mature remote-hiring market in Europe, mostly because London salaries and London office costs both made distributed work attractive faster than on the continent. The flip side: many 'UK remote' roles are really 'London-flex hybrid', expecting you in the office one or two days a fortnight. We surface roles that are explicitly remote within the UK and link the original employer page so you can verify before applying.
Two UK-specific things shape the market: IR35 contractor rules and the Skilled Worker visa salary threshold (raised to £38,700 in 2024). Both are addressed below.

UK remote hiring patterns
UK scaleups (Monzo, Octopus, Wise, Cleo) usually run a hub-based remote setup with London as default. Remote-first companies founded since 2020 (Pleo, Causal, smaller B2B SaaS) are properly distributed and run async. Older enterprises (banks, insurers, large consultancies) tend to advertise 'remote' but mean two-to-three days in London or Edinburgh.
Watch for 'remote within the UK' (genuinely remote), 'remote with occasional travel to London' (usually monthly, manageable), and 'hybrid - 2 days office' (not really remote).
Timezone and async expectations
UK working hours (9–6 GMT/BST) overlap easily with the rest of Europe and gives 3–4 hours of US East Coast overlap in the afternoon. This is why so many US companies use the UK as their EMEA hiring base. Don't expect deep async culture — most UK teams still run daily standups and same-day Slack expectations.
Salary expectations and London weighting
Senior software engineer roles in remote-first UK companies typically pay £80–140k base, with stretch packages at fintechs (Monzo, Revolut, Wise) reaching £160k+ for staff levels. Mid-level roles cluster £55–85k. Outside engineering, marketing and product manager pay sits 20–30% below US equivalents, partly because pension and statutory leave are richer.
Some UK companies pay 'London weighting' even for fully remote staff, others scrapped it during the 2022 distributed wave. The listing usually doesn't say — ask in screening.
Visa sponsorship via the Skilled Worker route
Since April 2024, the Skilled Worker visa salary threshold has been £38,700 for new applicants (with a small set of shortage-occupation exceptions). The employer must hold a sponsor licence, which limits which companies can realistically sponsor — the Home Office publishes a register of licensed sponsors that is worth checking before applying.
For genuinely remote-from-abroad work, sponsorship is rarely relevant: you wouldn't need a UK visa to work for a UK company from Lisbon. Sponsorship matters when you want to physically move to the UK. If that's your goal, prioritise companies on the licensed-sponsor register and roles above the salary threshold.
IR35 and contractor friction
UK companies hiring contractors (PSC route) carry IR35 determination liability if the contractor is inside scope. The result: many UK companies refuse PSC contractors and only hire via PAYE or umbrella, even for short engagements. If you contract through a personal limited company, expect explicit 'outside IR35' or 'inside IR35' tagging on listings — and walk away from listings that dodge the question.
