Australia's remote market has two distinct halves. The domestic half is dominated by Sydney and Melbourne tech employers (Atlassian, Canva, Culture Amp, Linktree) plus the major banks and miners, all hiring across the country with AEDT-anchored core hours. The international half — Australians working for US, UK, or pan-EU employers — is shaped almost entirely by what the candidate is willing to do at 4am.

This page surfaces both: domestic Australia-employed roles and international companies that explicitly hire Australian residents. The visa section addresses the most common 'can I move to Australia for a remote job' question.

The timezone trap

AEDT/AEST (Sydney/Melbourne) overlaps poorly with Europe and the US East Coast. Sydney 9am is midnight in London and 6pm New York the previous day. Most US-based remote roles that hire Australians end up requiring you to work 4am–noon Australian time, or to take a Singapore/Tokyo-adjacent night shift. This is workable for a year or two; few people sustain it long-term.

Companies that hire Australians thoughtfully (Stripe, GitHub, Buffer, Automattic, Canva's international team) either run async-first or staff a deliberate APAC pod with West Coast US overlap (Perth 9am ≈ San Francisco 6pm previous day, which is brutal). Read the timezone language carefully.

Domestic Australian remote hiring

Sydney and Melbourne anchor the bulk of Australian tech hiring, with Brisbane and Perth as smaller hubs. Atlassian, Canva, SafetyCulture, Linktree, and a long tail of B2B SaaS companies hire fully remote across the country. Salaries are AUD-denominated and tend to track Sydney bands regardless of where the employee lives.

Indicative 2026 ranges: senior software engineer AUD 160–220k, mid-level engineer AUD 120–160k, product manager AUD 140–200k. Tier-1 companies add 20–30% with strong equity. Super (employer pension contribution) is 11.5% on top of base salary as of 2025, rising to 12% in July 2025.

Superannuation, contracts, and notice

Australian employment is unbundled: the salary figure usually excludes super, which is paid into your nominated super fund (default funds are usually MySuper). Listings should specify 'salary + super' or 'salary inclusive of super' — if they don't, ask. Standard notice is four weeks for permanent roles. Casual and contract roles have different protections.

International companies hiring Australians via EOR (Deel, Remote.com) replicate this structure including super contributions, but watch for caps on long-service leave and parental-leave entitlements that an EOR sometimes can't replicate.

Visa routes for non-Australians

Australia's points-based Skilled Migration program (subclass 189, 190, 491) is the most common route for skilled professionals. It's competitive, requires a positive skills assessment, and is age-weighted (best between 25 and 33). Employer-sponsored visas (subclass 482, 186) require an employer with sponsorship approval and a role on the skilled-occupation list.

The Global Talent Visa (subclass 858) is reserved for genuinely high-achieving applicants in target sectors and is fast when it works. Working Holiday Maker visas can be a bridge for younger applicants from eligible countries.

Crucially: Australia generally requires you to be physically present to be on an Australian payroll. Remote-from-overseas work for an Australian company is almost always done via EOR or contractor arrangement.

Remote-first culture in Australia

Australian remote-first companies skew strongly async because the country's size makes synchronous Sydney-centric culture exhausting for Perth-based staff. Atlassian publicly built its 'Team Anywhere' programme around this; many smaller scaleups followed. The cultural baseline of low formality and short meetings makes the transition to async smoother than in many US or German contexts.
